RT60

Reverberation time (RT60) measurement for classrooms, meeting rooms, halls and sound test rooms, with analysis against standards and recommendations for acoustic treatment.

RT60
Reverberation time (RT60) is the time it takes for sound in a room to fall by 60 dB after the source stops. Too much reverberation makes speech unclear: in classrooms and meeting rooms people struggle to understand each other, and in test rooms it affects measurement results. How we measure: an omnidirectional (dodecahedron) loudspeaker is placed in the room and RT60 is recorded at several microphone positions, typically 4 to 6 points, with a calibrated sound level analyser. Results are given in 1/3-octave bands following ISO 3382-2:2008, and classrooms are compared with the criteria of ANSI/ASA S12.60. We also measure the background noise in the room. What you receive: a report with RT60 at each point and frequency, average values and charts, a comparison with the recommended values, and practical recommendations such as sound-absorbing wall or ceiling panels. After treatment, we can measure again to verify the improvement.

Example projects

Bitwise: sound test room

Bitwise: sound test room

RT60 measured at four points in a sound test room following ISO 3382-2:2008, from 500 Hz to 2 kHz.

  • Average RT60 at 500 Hz: 0.21 s
  • Highest average: 0.32 s at 1 kHz
  • Background noise: 23.7 dB(A)
  • Result within the recommended values in the report

Bangkok University: classroom

RT60 measured at four points from 200 Hz to 10 kHz and compared with the classroom criteria of ANSI/ASA S12.60.

  • RT60 at 500 Hz: 2.35 s (recommended below 0.6 s for classrooms over 200 m³)
  • Background noise: 55.3 dB(A) (target below 35 dB(A))
  • Recommended: sound-absorbing ceiling panels
  • Recommended: reduce air-conditioning noise

Kasetsart University: classrooms 402 and 403

RT60 at 500 Hz measured at 5 to 6 positions in each room before and after acoustic treatment (2024).

  • Room 403: from 4.15–5.50 s down to 1.05–1.35 s
  • Room 403: average reduction about 3.6 s
  • Room 402: from 1.80–2.45 s down to 0.75–1.45 s
  • Verified by measurement after installation
